Unlocking Longitudinality: How Hybrid Claims Data Transforms RWE/HEOR Studies

In a new guest column on The Evidence Base, Forian’s Wouter van der Pluijm and Mike Sicilia discuss how hybrid claims data is helping solve one of the toughest challenges in real-world evidence (RWE) and health economics and outcomes research (HEOR): consistently tracking patients over time. Traditional closed claims data often loses sight of patients when they change jobs, insurers, or plans, which can limit the strength of study results. By combining open claims from providers and clearinghouses with closed payer data, hybrid claims create a more complete and continuous view of each patient’s healthcare journey, improving the quality and reliability of longitudinal research.

Using Forian’s CHRONOS™ hybrid claims ecosystem, the authors show how this approach extends patient histories, fills critical data gaps, and enhances the depth of insights across multiple therapeutic areas, including MASH, ALS, and cholangiocarcinoma. The result is stronger, more comprehensive evidence that supports better understanding of patient outcomes and healthcare utilization.
